February severe weather

The February 2004 floods were the worst seen in many parts of New Zealand for decades. Rainfall and wind records were broken. Rivers overtopped their banks, and farms and houses were inundated. Many organisations have an interest in – and data on – these events.

With the aim of sharing that information, these web pages provide easy access to information on the severe weather and flooding from February 2004.

Here we present weather maps and warnings from MetService, satellite images from NIWA, information on data held elsewhere, and links to other sites that may be of interest.
