NIWA's wave model, has been used to simulate wave heights across the Canterbury continental shelf and along the coast by refracting deep-water waves to the coast and adding in the effect of local winds. This provides near real-time information on wave heights along the Canterbury coast for use by surfers, fishers, coastal planners and engineers.
